Basenji Screensaver

Dan (Photo ©Deborah Kirby, 2008)

Sometimes that perfect photo comes along. A sunny day on the deck provided just that opportunity. There is nothing that makes this African dog happier than the warm sun. This photo is screen-saver size so please feel free to click on it, and capture it.

Table Set In a Garden

Table Set in a Garden
Pierre Bonnard
Winter is dragging on and this painting always reminds me of a warm summer day, with no wind, sitting under a shade tree. This is my favorite painting by Bonnard.

Decisons

I feel this way sometimes. Left? Right? or just hang out in the middle?

22º Below Zero...but Sunny

The temperature today was miserably cold and no one ventured outside for more than a few minutes. With sub-zero temperatures comes brilliant blue sunny skies that seem endless. This monster dog of ours who can't stand to have his photo taken was somewhat obligatory today. I took advantage of the photo-op.

Painting with Three Colors

Hey Sister, Soul Sister ©Deborah Kirby, 2008
Red Chair Snooze ©Deborah Kirby, 2007

Over the last couple of months I have been doing different paintings with only three colors: Transparent Pyrrol Orange, Quinacridone Gold Deep and Ultramarine Turquoise. These colors were offered in a triad through Daniel Smith. While it was challenging on some level I was able to produce a couple of paintings I was pleased with.

Nature's Art

The window screen above where I sit at my computer has made a wonderful canvas for nature's art at -22º on this winter's day. Click and enlarge this photo for a real treat.

Pierre Bonnard

My first love in art is French Impressionalism with a particular fondness for Les Nabis and the Fauvists.

Goldfish

Deb's Bohemia

This was my spot. I miss it.

~ The Dessert ~ after Matisse

I was so taken with the Fauvists in art school that I painted this 'after' one of Henri Matisse's paintings. It was purely an exercise -- a weekly assignment. I learned however, that even a painting which looks simple is infinitely much more complicated than what one perceives.

The Striped Blouse

I'll Take Some Crumpets With My Tea

No... we don't feed Jack at the table but apparently he thought the rules should be changed this particular Sunday morning. Maybe the headines were too interesting to resist?

The Look

This should explain why there will not be a many photos of my Basenji in this blog. He simply hates to have his photo taken and in no uncertain terms lets me know it by 'the look'. Photo ©Deborah Kirby, 2008.

Lost Edge

I loved the 'lost edge' on Jack in this photo. Photo ©Deborah Kirby, 2008.

An Unusual Sighting

This is the second winter I have noticed a pair of Purple Finches at the feeders. Very unusual as these birds do not over-winter here. I've heard that there have also been sightings of Goldfinches! I hope they have found feeders filled with nyger seed so they can survive. Photo ©Deborah Kirby, 2008.

Red Twigged Dogwood

A dear friend sent me this photo of the red twigged dogwoods on their property. Photo ©Renita Delisle, 2006

Red Twigged Dogwood ~ Painting

I was so inspired by Renita's photo so I decided to paint it! I normally paint on the warmer side of the palette which you can see reflected in my interpretation.

Egret ~ by David Rollins

One of those photos that makes a person utter "I wish I had taken this." Fortunately, a very gifted photographer, David Rollins snapped this incredible shot of an egret preening. I liked it so much that I bought a print and gave it to my husband for his office. Please do have a look at David's body of work.

The Art of Craig Mullins

This painting, by Craig Mullins is quite possibly my favorite watercolor painting of any artist.

Hoar Frost on American Cranberry Tree

Winter on the Dakota Prairie holds a certain beauty which is captured in the hoar frost on the American Canberry tree. This is a picture waiting to be painted. Photo ©Deborah Kirby, 2007.

Hoar Frost on the Canadian Chokecherry

The hoar frost on the Canadian Chokecherry tree in our front yard portrays mystery in its beauty. Photo ©Deborah Kirby, 2007.
